The need for perfection will delay your dreams and goals.

My goal was to launch this new blog and page on January 1. But I wasn’t quite happy with a few pages and there were a couple technical things I was still trying to figure out. And so I waited.

I waited 9 days.

Then yesterday I realized, if I wait until everything is perfect it’s never going to happen. I won’t launch the page. I won’t be blogging. I will continue to seek perfection and my goal will never be reached.

I understand the desire for the perfection in life. We want things that are big and important to be perfect when we present them to the world. And yet this constant need for perfection can hamper us and often keep us from moving forward.

When I was about to propose officially to my wife, I had this ideal plan. It was perfect. It included a walk in a park, a picnic lunch in a beautiful setting and when the moment was right I would get down on one knee and ask one of the most important question of my life.

Then it rained. And rained.

Instead of waiting for the perfect plan and conditions, I simply asked over a breakfast while the storm outside continued to dump rain and kill my “perfect” plan.

I could have waited. It would have eventually stopped raining and I could have pulled it off. But I didn’t want to wait. The event was too important. The love I had for Amy and the dream for our life together was far greater than any need for the perfect setting.

The dream or goal that you have for your life is far too important to wait until everything lines up perfectly. There will always be tweaks and changes that need to be made. There will always be ways of improving things along the way and that is part of the great joy of seeing your dream or goal evolve and grow.

This page and this blog is not perfect. There are a lot of things I still have to learn about a self-hosted website. But here is the great new; I can learn and grow and things can and will get better as I go. My writing will improve, my site will be tweaked, my goal will grow and change.

Your dream, your goal is far too important to simply wait until everything is perfect. So get things prepared and do your best but don’t wait for perfection before you push go.

What dream or goal do you need move forward with in this new year?
